Highly Recommended! A valuable replacement for Notepad, this powerful text editor is the only text editor I use for just about everything I work on. It has many features and capabilities that simply put Notepad to shame. I cannot express to you how powerful this tool really is. Check it out for yourself.

OpenOffice.org
(2.0 Beta 2)
Free
(75.1 MB)

The first office suite to use the new OASIS OpenDocument format.

Open Source Certified

OpenOffice.org [OOo] is the open source alternative to Microsoft's Office applications. I personally prefer using OpenOffice.org, because it seems to offer better control and smaller file sizes than Microsoft Office. I can easily open, edit, and save MS-Office files or I can save them in the OpenOffice.org file format. If you're use to using MS-Office, OOo will work in much the same way. There are minor differences between the two Office suites, but not many. They each have their own advantages, but if you are willing to give OpenOffice.org a chance, you will quickly learn how powerful this application suite really is. The biggest, and most obvious difference is the price.

Barca

Barca from Poco Systems is an inexpensive yet powerful tool that includes a Calendar, Email, and Planner all in one. We use Barca exclusivly instead of the overly bloated Outlook, because it does everything Outlook does. Not to mention how much smaller (filesize) it is too.

PocoMail is an excellent email client from Poco Systems that Barca's email engine is based on. We originally started using PocoMail because we were in need of a much better email client than Outlook Express. Since then, we've replaced PocoMail with Barca.
